The series on Universal Tension continues with questions & comments from a reader’s’ email (read the previous Universal Tension posts here and here):
Q:
Thank you for this series on Universal Tension. I have been mulling over – what is my Universal Tension? I thought about all the recurrent situations and came up with this list.
- Trust vs. Distrust
- Being Self Protective vs. being Open0
- Team Player vs. Loner
In the end I believe boils right to Trust vs. Distrust. Because everything I wrote down came out as a manifestation of that dynamic. What’s your feedback?
A:
Thank you for sharing your process.
When naming the Universal Tension, you’re identifying two complementary force-fields. Both sides of the U.T. are valuable. Each is an expression of Basic Life Energy. And so in naming them, make sure that each side is expressed positively.
What do I mean by positive?
Positive words stand on their own two feet.
A positive word stands on its own inherent meaning. The term “distrust” derives its meaning the word . . . trust. So it’s not standing on its own two feet. It’s derivative. Distrust is a way of saying “not trust”. But what are you doing when you’re not trusting? What’s the positive way to say that?
How can you find the positive hidden in the negative?
Reflect on the word distrust. Feel into it. What is another way to describe this quality? A positive way that while it’s in tension with trust also expresses a quality that is life-affirming and life-supporting.
Each side of the Universal Tension – is life-affirming and life-supporting.
When you reflect on trust – you should be able to see and feel how – wisely – embodying trust would be life-affirming and life-supporting.
And when you name the energy that is in tension with trust - you should easily and naturally discern life-affirming and life-supporting nature of that quality.
Each side of the U.T. has its own beauty and integrity.
Here’s how to find your life-affirming and life-supporting word.
- Start with the negative word i.e. distrust.
- Focus your attention on the inner experience of distrust
- Let go of all associations, stories, and your personal history of distrust
- Feel into the life-affirming and life-supporting energy that is deeper than words, stories, and history.
- Sense the life-affirming and life-support presence of that energy in your body.
- Give that energy a name. A name that when you repeat it – evokes that life-affirming and life-supporting energy.
So, what is your Universal Tension?
What questions do you have about how to identify your U.T.?
