Our 19-year old Australian Shepard Milea has been declining and declining for months. Last August she suffered a stroke but after three days of lying on her bed, she stood back up and walked. The vet was astounded. Almost a year has passed since then. Three days ago she stopped walking. Since then I’ve been giving her water but she wouldn’t take any food.
Last night she looked at me and said, “It’s time.”
This morning she was even more frail and incapacitated. I bathed her. And she lay in the sun. But, the message was the same. So, I talked to a compassionate vet. Took her over. In the car, her breathing became more labored. She was teetering across the edge. Now, she’s gone.
What a bundle of love. She brought such joy to our family. My son, Aaron, his buddy, Quentin, and I dug out a grave in the garden. Covered it with flag stone. A moment of silence. Aaron and I hugged.
The love that beats at the heart of Life appears in infinite forms. Some you see. Some you don’t. Some you can cuddle with and run with. Look around. Tails are wagging.
